Esta ind\u00fastria tem sofrido fortes transforma\u00e7\u00f5es, causadas pelos diversos regulamentos implementados a n\u00edvel global que visam proteger o ambiente, inova\u00e7\u00f5es tecnol\u00f3gicas e exig\u00eancias dos consumidores por op\u00e7\u00f5es mais sustent\u00e1veis. No entanto, esta ind\u00fastria veio para ficar, pois \u00e9 uma base das economias e modo de vida, estando presente em todos os aspetos da nossa vida. Na Europa, apenas cerca de 26% do pl\u00e1stico \u00e9 usado para embalagens, sendo o resto utilizado em outros setores, como a constru\u00e7\u00e3o, mobili\u00e1rio, t\u00eaxteis e eletr\u00f3nica.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember53\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Nos anos 50 do s\u00e9culo passado, a produ\u00e7\u00e3o global de pl\u00e1stico anual era cerca de dois milh\u00f5es de toneladas, tendo aumentado exponencialmente, para 450 milh\u00f5es de toneladas em 2020. S\u00f3 em Portugal foram produzidas 91.520 toneladas de pl\u00e1stico em 2020, sendo 3.408 toneladas de pl\u00e1sticos de uso \u00fanico. Neste artigo abordamos algumas das tend\u00eancias e desafios que est\u00e3o a moldar o futuro da ind\u00fastria do pl\u00e1stico.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Tend\u00eancias na ind\u00fastria do pl\u00e1stico<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember55\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A sustentabilidade tornou-se na maior prioridade para a ind\u00fastria do pl\u00e1stico, devido aos esfor\u00e7os dos estados e da sociedade para reduzir o impacto do pl\u00e1stico no ambiente e na sa\u00fade humana. A reciclagem de pl\u00e1stico \u00e9 uma iniciativa que est\u00e1 a ganhar cada vez mais for\u00e7a e que as empresas deste setor devem ter em conta na delinea\u00e7\u00e3o das suas estrat\u00e9gias de m\u00e9dio e longo prazo. Os investimentos em tecnologia de reciclagem s\u00e3o mandat\u00f3rios para as empresas na atualidade.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember56\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Uma tend\u00eancia crescente neste setor \u00e9 o desenvolvimento de biopl\u00e1sticos biodegrad\u00e1veis. A capacidade de produ\u00e7\u00e3o deste tipo de pl\u00e1sticos a n\u00edvel global encontra-se atualmente em 2.2 milh\u00f5es de toneladas, mas prev\u00ea-se que este n\u00famero triplique para 6.3 milh\u00f5es de toneladas em 2027. Para al\u00e9m destes pl\u00e1sticos biodegrad\u00e1veis, o investimento em Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento por parte das empresas e universidades leva a um surgimento de uma grande diversidade de novos materiais.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember57\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Com a ascens\u00e3o da ind\u00fastria 4.0 e a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o tecnol\u00f3gica a um ritmo cada vez mais acelerado, a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de pl\u00e1stico est\u00e1 cada vez mais eficiente e precisa nos processos de fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o. Os equipamentos modernos s\u00e3o capazes de produzir pl\u00e1sticos de maior qualidade e velocidade, e com menos desperd\u00edcio, permitindo um controlo mais detalhado dos processos produtivos.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Desafios na Ind\u00fastria do Pl\u00e1stico<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember59\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Devido ao impacto ambiental dos pl\u00e1sticos e da sua n\u00e3o reutiliza\u00e7\u00e3o, os governos t\u00eam intensificado as regulamenta\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais. Especialmente na Europa, que \u00e9 o bloco l\u00edder na implementa\u00e7\u00e3o de regulamenta\u00e7\u00f5es sustent\u00e1veis, os pl\u00e1sticos t\u00eam estado na frente das preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es. Uma das pol\u00edticas que mais impacto teve no dia a dia dos consumidores foi a elimina\u00e7\u00e3o de uma grande quantidade de produtos de pl\u00e1stico de uso \u00fanico, atrav\u00e9s da Diretiva 2019\/904. As empresas que produziam este tipo de produtos viram-se ent\u00e3o for\u00e7adas a adaptar-se e evoluir de forma a se manterem em opera\u00e7\u00e3o. A Uni\u00e3o Europeia continua ativamente a ajustar os regulamentos de forma a transformar a forma como os produtos de pl\u00e1stico s\u00e3o criados, produzidos e reciclados na Europa para uma transi\u00e7\u00e3o econ\u00f3mica sustent\u00e1vel. Devido a isto, as empresas industriais t\u00eam de se manter atentas \u00e0 quantidade crescente de requisitos que devem cumprir para se manterem em funcionamento.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A gest\u00e3o dos res\u00edduos \u00e9 um grande desafio da ind\u00fastria do pl\u00e1stico, pois esta nem sempre \u00e9 economicamente vi\u00e1vel, e a disposi\u00e7\u00e3o inadequada dos res\u00edduos pl\u00e1sticos pode causar danos ambientais significativos.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A volatilidade nos pre\u00e7os das mat\u00e9rias primas, nomeadamente o petr\u00f3leo e os seus derivados, afeta diretamente os custos de produ\u00e7\u00e3o na ind\u00fastria do pl\u00e1stico. A depend\u00eancia de mat\u00e9rias-primas importadas tamb\u00e9m tem um forte impacto na produ\u00e7\u00e3o, e pode causar vulnerabilidades na cadeia de distribui\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Conclus\u00e3o<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A ind\u00fastria do pl\u00e1stico est\u00e1 em constante mudan\u00e7a, sendo afetada por in\u00fameros fatores, tanto internos \u00e0 ind\u00fastria, como inova\u00e7\u00e3o tecnol\u00f3gica e altera\u00e7\u00f5es legislativas, como externos, por exemplo tend\u00eancias de consumo e exig\u00eancias de sustentabilidade por parte da sociedade.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Os desafios s\u00e3o imensos, mas est\u00e3o constantemente a surgir novas oportunidades, com diferentes aplica\u00e7\u00f5es dos produtos pl\u00e1sticos, novos materiais e inova\u00e7\u00f5es tecnol\u00f3gicas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">As empresas que conseguem se adaptar a este mercado em r\u00e1pida mudan\u00e7a, ver\u00e3o sucesso nos seus empreendimentos. way of life, supplying materials to various other sectors such as the automotive, construction, health and packaging industries. This industry has undergone strong transformations, caused by the various regulations implemented at global level aimed at protecting the environment, technological innovations and consumer demands for more sustainable options. However, this industry is here to stay, as it is a cornerstone of economies and ways of life, being present in every aspect of our lives. In Europe, only around 26 per cent of plastic is used for packaging, the rest being used in other sectors such as construction, furniture, textiles and electronics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In the 1950s, annual global plastic production was around two million tonnes, rising exponentially to 450 million tonnes in 2020. In Portugal alone, 91,520 tonnes of plastic were produced in 2020, 3,408 tonnes of which were single-use plastics.\u00a0 In this article we look at some of the trends and challenges that are shaping the future of the plastics industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Trends in the plastics industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Sustainability has become a top priority for the plastics industry, due to the efforts of states and society to reduce the impact of plastics on the environment and human health. Plastic recycling is an initiative that is gaining more and more momentum and that companies in this sector must take into account when outlining their medium and long-term strategies. Investment in recycling technology is a must for companies today.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A growing trend in this sector is the development of biodegradable bioplastics. The global production capacity for this type of plastic currently stands at 2.2 million tonnes, but this figure is expected to triple to 6.3 million tonnes by 2027. In addition to these biodegradable plastics, investment in research and development by companies and universities has led to the emergence of a wide variety of new materials.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">With the rise of Industry 4.0 and technological evolution at an ever-accelerating pace, plastic production is becoming increasingly efficient and precise in its manufacturing processes. Modern equipment is capable of producing plastics of higher quality and speed, and with less waste, allowing for more detailed control of production processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Challenges in the Plastics Industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Due to the environmental impact of plastics and their non-reuse, governments have intensified environmental regulations. Especially in Europe, which is the leading bloc in implementing sustainable regulations, plastics have been at the forefront of concerns. One of the policies that has had the greatest impact on consumers&#8217; daily lives is the elimination of a large number of single-use plastic products through Directive 2019\/904. Companies that produced this type of product were then forced to adapt and evolve in order to stay in business. The European Union continues to actively adjust regulations in order to transform the way plastic products are created, produced and recycled in Europe for a sustainable economic transition. Because of this, industrial companies have to keep an eye on the increasing amount of requirements they must fulfil in order to stay in business.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Waste management is a major challenge for the plastics industry, as it is not always economically viable, and improper disposal of plastic waste can cause significant environmental damage.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Volatility in the price of raw materials, particularly oil and its derivatives, directly affects production costs in the plastics industry. Dependence on imported raw materials also has a strong impact on production, and can cause vulnerabilities in the distribution chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The plastics industry is constantly changing and is affected by numerous factors, both internal to the industry, such as technological innovation and legislative changes, and external, such as consumer trends and society&#8217;s demands for sustainability.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The challenges are immense, but new opportunities are constantly emerging, with different applications for plastic products, new materials and technological innovations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Companies that manage to adapt to this rapidly changing market will see success in their endeavours.
