O consumo mundial de papel aumentou 400% nos \u00faltimos 40 anos, com 35% das \u00e1rvores colhidas a serem usadas para a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de papel. Este consumo tem tend\u00eancia para aumentar, devido ao aumento do uso de papel, gra\u00e7as \u00e0 sua biodegradabilidade mais r\u00e1pida e menos t\u00f3xica para o ambiente.<\/p>\n

Esta \u00e9 uma for\u00e7a do papel que deve ser explorada e louvada, pois pode ser uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o para evitar problemas de sa\u00fade e ambientais. No entanto, a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de pasta e papel tamb\u00e9m podem ter\u00a0 impactos negativos que devem ser minimizados para garantir o futuro desta ind\u00fastria.<\/p>\n

O impacto ambiental<\/strong><\/p>\n

A produ\u00e7\u00e3o de pasta, papel e cart\u00e3o tem um impacto ambiental inerente, devido \u00e0 necessidade de mat\u00e9ria prima, proveniente muitas vezes de planta\u00e7\u00f5es florestais, que s\u00e3o geralmente monoculturas com fortes impactos na biodiversidade das zonas exploradas. Especialmente no caso de Portugal, a monocultura de eucaliptos para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de pasta e papel \u00e9 nociva para a biodiversidade, para a qualidade do solo e tem graves consequ\u00eancias devido aos inc\u00eandios florestais.<\/p>\n

Para al\u00e9m dos impactos relacionados com as mat\u00e9rias primas, a ind\u00fastria de pasta e papel \u00e9 o quinto maior consumidor de energia, sendo respons\u00e1vel por 4% de todo o consumo mundial de energia, e esta ind\u00fastria usa mais \u00e1gua para produzir uma tonelada de produto do que qualquer outra ind\u00fastria.<\/p>\n

A emiss\u00e3o de gases efeito estufa \u00e9 um problema industrial a n\u00edvel global, e a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de um quilograma de papel pode resultar aproximadamente na emiss\u00e3o de um quilograma de CO2, tendo sido produzidas 2 milh\u00f5es de toneladas de papel e cart\u00e3o em 2021. No entanto, t\u00eam surgido in\u00fameras inova\u00e7\u00f5es tecnol\u00f3gicas que visam contrariar este impacto. De acordo com um estudo da Comiss\u00e3o Europeia, a ind\u00fastria de pasta, papel e cart\u00e3o pode reduzir as suas emiss\u00f5es de gases efeito estufa em 62%, e consumo de energia em 14% mesmo com um aumento da produ\u00e7\u00e3o. Esta ind\u00fastria \u00e9 a quarta mais intensiva em energia na Europa, e estas redu\u00e7\u00f5es podem ser a chave para uma transi\u00e7\u00e3o para a economia sustent\u00e1vel.<\/p>\n

Como parte da Uni\u00e3o Europeia, a ind\u00fastria da pasta, papel e cart\u00e3o em Portugal est\u00e1 sujeita \u00e0s regulamenta\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais estabelecidas pela Comiss\u00e3o Europeia. Sustainability is an increasingly relevant issue and has become an essential pillar in the evolution of modern industries. With environmental awareness and pressure from consumers and legislators for greener practices, industrial companies have to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.<\/p>\n

Worldwide paper consumption has increased by 400 per cent in the last 40 years, with 35 per cent of the trees harvested being used to make paper. This consumption is set to rise due to the increased use of paper, thanks to its faster biodegradability and less toxicity to the environment.<\/p>\n

This is a strength of paper that should be exploited and praised, as it can be a solution to avoid health and environmental problems. However, pulp and paper production can also have negative impacts that must be minimised to guarantee the future of this industry.<\/p>\n

Environmental impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

The production of pulp, paper and cardboard has an inherent environmental impact due to the need for raw materials, which often come from forestry plantations, which are generally monocultures with strong impacts on the biodiversity of the areas they exploit. Especially in the case of Portugal, the monoculture of eucalyptus trees for the production of pulp and paper is harmful to biodiversity, soil quality and has serious consequences due to forest fires.<\/p>\n

In addition to the impacts related to raw materials, the pulp and paper industry is the fifth largest consumer of energy, accounting for 4% of all the world’s energy consumption, and this industry uses more water to produce one tonne of product than any other industry.<\/p>\n

Greenhouse gas emissions are a global industrial problem, and the production of one kilogram of paper can result in approximately one kilogram of CO2 being emitted, with 2 million tonnes of paper and cardboard produced in 2021. However, there have been numerous technological innovations aimed at counteracting this impact. According to a study by the European Commission, the pulp, paper and cardboard industry can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 62 per cent and energy consumption by 14 per cent even with an increase in production. This industry is the fourth most energy-intensive in Europe, and these reductions could be the key to a transition to a sustainable economy.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Industry 4.0 and the great technological advances of recent years, the adoption of these technologies allows companies to reduce their costs with economies of scale in the medium and long term.<\/p>\n

As part of the European Union, the pulp, paper and board industry in Portugal is subject to the environmental regulations laid down by the European Commission. As leaders in environmental protection, European legislation is becoming increasingly demanding and stringent, so companies that implement sustainable practices quickly are better placed to receive European support, comply with regulations and avoid fines and sanctions.<\/p>\n

With consumers and investors becoming increasingly environmentally aware, companies that demonstrate a commitment to responsible environmental practices are able to strengthen their reputation and attract customers and business partners.<\/p>\n

The reuse and appropriate treatment of water minimises water pollution. It is the responsibility of all companies to ensure the quality of water and the protection of rivers, for everyone’s safety.<\/p>\n

Finally, the adoption of more modern equipment to increase energy efficiency, combined with the implementation of renewable energy sources, is an excellent way to reduce the environmental impact of pulp, paper and cardboard production.<\/p>\n
