NGR Achieves EFSA Approval for the LSP Process

By Sabino Borges
Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen GmbH (NGR) has reached an important milestone in plastic recycling: the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved its Liquid State Polymerization (LSP) process for food-grade PET recycling. This is the first technology to receive this validation under the new European regulation (EU) 2022/1616.

What Makes LSP Special?
Unlike traditional processes, which require high temperatures and long processing times, LSP accelerates recycling by acting on the liquid state of PET. This means:
✅ Lower energy consumption – Faster and more efficient processing.
✅ Greater food safety – Removes impurities with high effectiveness.
✅ Superior quality – Maintains stability and improves the viscosity of recycled PET.
✅ Sustainability – Reduces environmental impact and expands the use of recycled PET in food packaging.

Approval and Market Impact
NGR submitted its technology to EFSA in July 2023 and, after a rigorous review process, received a positive opinion in January 2025. The certification confirms the effectiveness of LSP across all machines in the P:REACT line, solidifying NGR as a global leader in food-grade PET recycling.
Josef Hochreiter, CEO of NGR, emphasizes the importance of this achievement: “This EFSA approval is a testament to the innovative strength and expertise of our team. Being the first to receive this validation demonstrates our commitment to developing sustainable and safe technologies for the circular economy.”
Sabino Borges adds: “This recognition is not just a technical milestone, but a crucial step for the future of plastic recycling, ensuring high-quality materials and safety for food applications.”
EFSA now paves the way for the final authorization from the European Commission, allowing the LSP process to be widely adopted in the European market.
