O setor das tintas industriais está num período de grandes alterações, devido às inovações tecnológicas, exigências de sustentabilidade pelos clientes e consumidores e alterações legislativas.
Com a nossa presença na edição de 2024 da Drupa, tivemos o prazer de poder conversar com o Sr. F.Javier Bou Sepúlveda, Diretor Geral da unidade de produção da SAKATA INX CORPORATION em Espanha, com quem tivemos a oportunidade de abordar temas como o futuro da indústria, a importância da sustentabilidade para a Sakata INX, as inovações tecnológicas associadas a isto e perspectivas para o mercado Português.

Com formação em Engenharia Metalúrgica, o Sr. Javier Bou iniciou a sua jornada profissional no setor automóvel, onde passou 16 anos numa multinacional francesa. Após essa experiência, decidiu dedicar-se ao setor das tintas, onde se encontra há já 17 anos ao serviço da Sakata INX.
Inovações tecnológicas da Sakata INX na Drupa
A Drupa, sendo o maior evento a nível internacional para a indústria gráfica, aglomera imensas empresas diferentes que trazem e exibem para o mercado as suas novas tecnologias.
“A Sakata INX abrange praticamente todas as tecnologias de tintas, pelo que há segmentos da nossa atividade que são mais inovadores, outros que são mais maduros do ponto de vista tecnológico, mas mesmo naqueles que são mais maduros, vemos tendências de mercado ou novas aplicações condicionadas por aspectos externos, como a proibição da utilização de determinadas matérias-primas ou questões regulamentares, o que significa que estamos sempre a ter de desenvolver novas tecnologias ou aplicações semelhantes à tecnologia que temos.” afirma o Sr. Javier Bou.
“Aqui na drupa temos vários produtos que estão tecnologicamente na vanguarda e é difícil introduzi-los no mercado. Fazemo-los chegar diretamente ao mercado, contactando diretamente o cliente ou através de parcerias com empresas do sector.” – acrescenta.
Como empresa líder na indústria das tintas, a Sakata INX encontra-se sempre na vanguarda das inovações tecnológicas, trazendo tintas com características inovadoras, que visam marcar o futuro da indústria.
Para isto, investe fortemente em inovação e tecnologia, como confirma: “Na Sakata trabalham mais de 250 especialistas e técnicos de desenvolvimento, dando apoio global às diferentes unidades de produção. Obviamente, na nossa fábrica em Espanha temos o número necessário de químicos especializados para apoiar os nossos clientes, mas a nível global, este sempre foi um dos principais focos do grupo.”
Sustentabilidade na indústria das tintas
Quando questionado acerca da forma como a Sakata INX combina as aplicações dos seus produtos, com a inovação e a necessidade de ser mais sustentável, o Sr. Javier explica: “Mesmo as tecnologias de impressão mais maduras obrigam-nos a fazer novos desenvolvimentos ou ajustes condicionados pelas tendências de sustentabilidade. Não há dúvida de que a Europa é a mais avançada do mundo em termos de sustentabilidade, uma vez que tem requisitos mais exigentes, o que nos obriga a estar totalmente actualizados em relação a esses requisitos e, portanto, a ter a capacidade de inovar o nosso produto para satisfazer esses novos requisitos.”
A inovação neste setor deve ser contínua, impulsionada por fatores como regulamentações ambientais que exigem o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias e adaptação ou evolução das tecnologias já existentes, para um futuro mais verde e sustentável.
Gestão de Pessoas e Recursos
Como um C-Level na Sakata INX, questionamos o Sr. Javier acerca da forma como equilibra a parte técnica e de inovação, com a parte humana, de gestão de competências.
“O principal capital de uma empresa são as pessoas e não apenas as pessoas que trabalham na empresa orientadas para a tecnologia, mas também para a logística, para a produção, para qualquer área da empresa, as pessoas são fundamentais e o bom equilíbrio entre os recursos que dedica a uma área e a outra é o que lhe permite crescer de forma sustentável.” – afirma.
Como uma empresa a nível global, com mais de 120 anos de história e 5000 trabalhadores, a gestão das pessoas é essencial, em especial a nível intercultural, adaptando-se à diversidade de valores e tradições de cada país no qual estão presentes.
Perspectivas para Portugal
Abordando o tema de Portugal, perguntamos ao Sr. Javier acerca das relações e expectativas da Sakata INX para o País. “Sempre tivemos expectativas porque é um país que está próximo de nós, a logística é muito importante na nossa atividade. É um mercado em que começámos recentemente a colaborar com a Ruy de Lacerda, há dois anos e meio e temos expectativas. É de facto difícil competir porque conhecemos o mercado, sabemos que os nossos concorrentes estão lá a trabalhar há muito tempo e bem, portanto não é fácil entrar quando os outros já lá estão.”
Acerca da parceria com a Ruy de Lacerda, o Sr. Javier explica também: “Para convencer um cliente que já está a utilizar uma tinta que não é nossa a mudar para a nossa tinta, é preciso oferecer algo diferente. Podemos competir em termos de preço, mas essa não é a nossa estratégia. Podemos competir em termos de qualidade, de desempenho, de serviço técnico e, para isso, é essencial trabalhar com um parceiro local. Podemos fornecer um bom produto, uma boa tecnologia, mas no final, o contacto final com o cliente é através da Ruy de Lacerda. Quanto mais tecnológico é o produto, mais necessidade há dessa colaboração. A colaboração é necessária e só com essa contribuição de um bom produto e uma boa assistência local é possível crescer no mercado.”
A Sakata INX
A Sakata INX é a terceira maior produtora de tintas do planeta. Fundada em 1896 em Osaka, Japão, expandiu-se a nível global na década de 80, estabelecendo unidades de produção em Taiwan, Espanha e nos Estados Unidos. Emprega atualmente mais de 5000 pessoas à volta do mundo.

Sakata INX – Iberian and International Market Outlook – Mr Javier Bou
The industrial coatings sector is going through a period of great change, due to technological innovations, sustainability demands from customers and consumers and legislative changes.
With our presence at the 2024 edition of Drupa, we had the pleasure of talking to Mr Javier Bou, General Manager of Sakata INX’s production unit in Spain, with whom we had the opportunity to discuss topics such as the future of the industry, the importance of sustainability for Sakata INX, the technological innovations associated with this and the outlook for the Portuguese market.

With a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mr Javier Bou began his professional journey in the automotive sector, where he spent 16 years with a French multinational. After this experience, he decided to dedicate himself to the paint sector, where he has been working for Sakata INX for 17 years.
Sakata INX’s technological innovations at Drupa
As the largest international event for the printing industry, Drupa brings together many different companies to showcase their new technologies.
“Sakata INX covers practically all ink technologies, so there are segments of our activity that are more innovative, others that are more mature from a technological point of view, but even in those that are more mature, we see market trends or new applications conditioned by external aspects, such as bans on the use of certain raw materials or regulatory issues, which means that we are always having to develop new technologies or applications similar to the technology we have.” says Mr Javier Bou.
“Here at drupa we have several products that are technologically at the cutting edge and it’s difficult to introduce them to the market. We bring them directly to the market by contacting the customer directly or through partnerships with companies in the sector.” – he adds.
As a leading company in the paint industry, Sakata INX is always at the forefront of technological innovations, bringing paints with innovative features that aim to mark the future of the industry.
To do this, it invests heavily in innovation and technology, as it confirms: “More than 250 development specialists and technicians work at Sakata, providing global support to the different production units. Obviously, at our plant in Spain we have the necessary number of specialised chemists to support our customers, but at a global level, this has always been one of the group’s main focuses.”
Sustainability in the ink industry
When asked how Sakata INX combines the applications of its products with innovation and the need to be more sustainable, Mr Javier explains: “Even the most mature printing technologies force us to make new developments or adjustments conditioned by sustainability trends. There is no doubt that Europe is the most advanced in the world in terms of sustainability, as it has more demanding requirements, which obliges us to be fully up to date with these requirements and therefore to have the ability to innovate our product to meet these new requirements.”
Innovation in this sector must be continuous, driven by factors such as environmental regulations that require the development of new technologies and the adaptation or evolution of existing technologies for a greener and more sustainable future.
People and Resource Management
As a C-Level at Sakata INX, we asked Mr Javier about how he balances the technical and innovation side with the human, skills management side.
“A company’s main capital is its people, and not just the people who work in the technology-orientated company, but also in logistics, in production, in any area of the company, people are fundamental and the right balance between the resources you dedicate to one area and another is what allows you to grow in a sustainable way.” – he says.
As a global company with more than 120 years of history and 5,000 employees, people management is essential, especially at an intercultural level, adapting to the diversity of values and traditions of each country in which they operate.
Prospects for Portugal
On the subject of Portugal, we asked Mr Javier about Sakata INX’s relations and expectations for the country. “We’ve always had expectations because it’s a country that’s close to us, logistics is very important in our business. It’s a market in which we recently started collaborating with Ruy de Lacerda, two and a half years ago, and we have expectations. It’s really difficult to compete because we know the market, we know that our competitors have been working there for a long time and well, so it’s not easy to enter when others are already there.”
About the partnership with Ruy de Lacerda, Mr Javier also explains: “To convince a customer who is already using a paint that isn’t ours to switch to our paint, you have to offer something different. We can compete on price, but that’s not our strategy. We can compete in terms of quality, performance and technical service, and for that it’s essential to work with a local partner. We can provide a good product, good technology, but in the end, the final contact with the customer is through Ruy de Lacerda. The more technological the product, the more need there is for collaboration. Collaboration is necessary and only with this contribution of a good product and good local assistance is it possible to grow in the market.”
Sakata INX
Sakata INX is the third largest paint manufacturer on the planet. Founded in 1896 in Osaka, Japan, it expanded globally in the 1980s, establishing production plants in Taiwan, Spain and the United States. It currently employs more than 5,000 people around the world.
In recent decades it has accelerated its growth and is now the benchmark company for sustainable and environmentally friendly paints. Around 95 per cent of Sakata INX’s paint sales are environmentally friendly.
