♻️ New European rules on plastic packaging: what changes for companies

Europe has taken a decisive step with the new Regulation (EU) 2025/40, replacing the former Directive 94/62/EC and redefining the future of packaging. 🌍
The goal is clear: to make all packaging recyclable, reduce waste, and accelerate the transition towards a truly circular economy.

🧩 The changes are already underway and will directly impact those who produce, import, or place packaging on the Portuguese market:
✅ Plastic packaging must contain recycled material by 2030.
✅ Waste reduction targets: –5% by 2030, –10% by 2035, –15% by 2040.
✅ Ban on certain single-use formats (fruit, individual portions, etc.).
✅ Greater producer responsibility and mandatory registration in national systems.

📦 In Portugal, decrees such as DL 78/2021 and DL 83/2022 are already aligning the country with these goals, reinforcing the role of companies in adapting to the new rules.
At Ruy de Lacerda, we closely monitor every legislative development, supporting our partners in the transition towards more sustainable and efficient solutions. 🌱
As José Quintino, from our technical and commercial team, notes:
💬 “More than complying with the law, it’s about anticipating the future, integrating sustainability as part of each product’s value.”

🚀 The challenge is great, but it is also an opportunity to innovate, reduce waste, and strengthen the competitiveness of the Portuguese industry.
